Distribution

The species is widespread throughout most of Britain, but absent from south-eastern England. It is a Palaearctic species.

Habitat and ecology

D. tibiale occurs under stones, in detritus in swampy areas, in broad-leaved and mixed woodland and on higher ground in more northerly areas (Merrett 1971). Adults have been recorded throughout most of the year, with a peak between late spring and summer.

Status

The spider is more common in the north than the south. Females may have been confused in the past with D. nigrum but males of the two species are distinct. Original author of profile: D.R.
