Species Details

Species name
Entelecara congenera (O.P.-Cambridge, 1879)
Taxonomy
Animalia :: Araneae :: Linyphiidae
habitat
arboreal

Distribution

The species appears to be largely restricted to central southern England and East Anglia, but there are scattered records as far north as Lancashire and South-west Yorkshire. It is widespread in north-western and central Europe, but absent from Ireland.

Habitat and ecology

Well-vegetated heathland and woodland. E. congenera occurs on pine trees, tall heather, gorse and other bushes in heathland and woodland. Adults of both sexes are found in May and June, females occasionally being recorded at other times of year.

Status

Recorded from 26 hectads since 1992 and apparently increasing. The spider is common at some sites, but very local. It has been confused in the past with the commoner E. acuminata, and females may be very difficult or impossible to distinguish.

Threats

The loss of heathland could threaten some sites, but the species is often found on gorse and pine in more marginal habitats rather than on open heathland.

Management and conservation

Ensure heathland is managed to retain some tall heather, gorse and scots pine. Text based on Dawson, I.K., Harvey, P.R., Merrett, P. & Russell-Smith, A.R. (in prep.).
