Distribution
The species is widespread throughout much of Britain. It is widespread in north-western Europe, but has not been recorded from Scandinavia.Habitat and ecology
M. fuscipes is often abundant in litter in its preferred habitat of broad-leaved and coniferous woodland, but it has also been recorded in other habitats including alder carr, rocky heathland, grassland and disused quarries. It has been found at up to 2000' (610 m) on mountains in Wales (Goodier 1970a 1970b) and up to 1500' (457 m) in Scotland (Merrett 1971). Adults are found throughout the year, with peaks in the spring and early summer, and in the autumn.Status
