Summary details for Theridion hannoniae Denis, 1944

Species Details

Species name
Theridion hannoniae Denis, 1944
Taxonomy
Animalia :: Araneae :: Theridiidae

Distribution

This species has only been recorded in Britain from Mynydd Bach, Glamorgan, S. Wales between 2007 and 2009 (Warmington, 2007). It was found under stones from a discarded gabion (a wire basket filled with stones, used in engineering work). These discarded gabions have since been removed from the site. It is widespread in western Europe including Denmark and Sweden but absent from eastern and central Europe.

Habitat and ecology

In Europe it nearly always found among large stones, in scree slopes, quarries, dykes on river banks and dry chalk rocks. It has spread north in recent years, probably largely as a result of being transported with rocks. The spiders build small webs in depressions in and between stones.

Status

It seems likely that this is a recent introduction to Britain but it is established in the wild. Further survey work is required to ascertain its true status.
