Distribution

The species is widespread in much of southern Britain but much less so in much of the north. It is widespread in western and central Europe.

Habitat and ecology

Although individual spiders may over-winter in houses, the species is most often found away from buildings, unlike the very similar T. melanurum. The webs are usually constructed on the trunks of trees and on the foliage of shrubs, but also on rock faces by the sea (I. Dawson, pers. comm.). Adults are mainly found from early to mid-summer, but males have occasionally been recorded as early as March and odd females throughout the year.
