Distribution

The species is widespread in central England, but very scattered or absent elsewhere in England and Wales. It has a Palaearctic distribution and seems to be fairly widespread in north-western Europe.

Habitat and ecology

T. affinis occurs amongst moss and grass, nearly always in wet, swampy localities. It has been observed after dark, in the webs of Tetragnatha striata feeding on ensnared Diptera (Crocker & Daws 1996). Adults have been recorded at most seasons, possibly mainly in early summer and from late summer to autumn.

Status

Generally a scarce species, which may be frequent in some localities. It may have been under-recorded because of the difficulty of surveying extremely wet habitats.

Threats

Drainage and drying-out of wetlands.

Management and conservation

Ensure wetlands are protected from drainage and have adequate water inputs. Text based on Dawson, I.K., Harvey, P.R., Merrett, P. & Russell-Smith, A.R. (in prep.).
