Distribution

This species was first detected from a photograph in the UK taken in London in 2007. Since then it has been reported widely with records concentrated in the London region but extending as far North as Blyth in Northumberland and West to Wanstrow in Somerset. Originally a Mediterranean species, Z. spinimana has shown a remarkable range expansion North of the Alps in the past four decades. Currently nearly all records in Britain are from buildings.

Habitat and ecology

In Britain Z. spinimana is apparently confined to buildings including houses, sheds, warehouses and plant centres. In the Mediterranean region it occurs in varied habitats including deciduous and coniferous woodlands, grasslands and maquis.

Status

Virtually all records in Britain are from buildings and there is no evidence for established populations out of doors.
