Distribution

Since the first specimen was captured in Wytham Wood, Oxford in 1952, the species has been found in a small number of sites in south-eastern England. It has also been recorded from France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic and Russia. There was some early confusion with C. incultus, now known as C. semiater.

Habitat and ecology

The preferred habitat of this species is the litter layer of broad-leaved woodland, although it has been found in other habitats including arable fields, sandy grassland, grazing marsh grassland and under-cliffs. In common with other species in the genus it is probably a winter-active species in Britain. Males have occurred between December and June.
